Available for: Folders, Single or Multiple Files, Window background, Desktop
Extended Delete allows you to find and delete files in a single folder and its subfolders that conform to a particular file mask (such as all .tmp files or all .bak files). It presents a list of the matching files found, and deletes only the files you choose from the list.
Files are always deleted to the Recycle Bin.
To use Extended Delete:
- Right-click one or more files, a folder, or the window background and choose Extended Delete from the ShellToys XP menu. (You can also start X-Delete from its shortcut on the Start menu.)
- The X-Delete window will appear. The Folder field will show the current folder. If you right-clicked one or more files, the File mask field will show their extensions. More about masks.
- You can change the folder to be searched by clicking the Browse button. You can also edit the file mask; recently-used file masks can be chosen from the drop-down list.
- Choose whether or not to search subfolders of the current folder by checking or unchecking the Include subfolders box.
- Click Find Files. Any files found that match the chosen mask will be listed below.
- Remove the checkmark beside any file that you don't want to delete.
- Click Delete Files to delete the files in the list that have checkmarks beside them.
Notes:
- You don't have to delete any files in the list. At any time, you can change the folder or file-mask and search again.
- Double-click any listed file to open it, or right-click to access its Windows context-menu. You can also drag-and-drop files to a folder or the desktop (to move/copy/create shortcuts to them) or drag them to an open application to edit them. Like Extended Search & Replace, you can use this utility as a simple search tool to find files to work with rather than to delete.
- You can start X-Delete from its shortcut on the Start menu.
